Canada vs Honduras… tonight

September 6th, 2008 | By: Kyle | 19 Comments »

Greetings all,

Well as the Canadian media has been saying all week, and by canadian media I mean sportsnet, as tsn and the score have said about 5 words each on tonight’s events. I guess it’s the lack of owning the rights to the match that cause this to happen, it’s do or die for 2010 world cup campaign. Tonight the Canucks are going to have to find 3 points in Montreal at le Stade Saputo… hopefully we don’t perform like the French did today against Austria.

Alas I must move forward, tonight’s matchup will be hopefully an offensively spirited affair as both teams should be expected to press offensively when the chances arrive rather than the way Jamaica played two and a half weeks ago. Canada has called up 22 players for the next two matches, with the same roster as the game against Jamaica being recalled, minus Greg Sutton who is home with his wife who has just given birth. The callups that might fight for a roster spot on the starting lineup and or on the bench are Lars Hirschfeld, Oliver Occean, Ante Jazic and Dejan Jakovic.

Lars Hirschfeld is the most interesting callup as he has been dropped from the starting lineup of the team he is playing with in Romania (CFR Cluj). But he is probably the best keeper we have at the moment, even with a bit of rust, why you ask, because good old own goal Onstad needs to stop punching the ball into the net and ruining our 3 points against Jamaica (yes I’m still slightly bitter). So at the moment Canada is tied for 2nd in the group standings, and a win tonight would allow them to keep that spot or even be tied for 1st depending on the results in the Jamaica vs Mexico game. So if you can’t watch the game because sportsnet decided to have one of it’s brain farts and tape delayed the game, go over to Out of Touch for a liveblog that J will be running, with myself adding my 2 cents and feel free to leave a comment, we are all friends in the end.

Go Canada Go

Yeah, it’s too bad that game 2 out of 6 is a must-win but it truly is. I was decently impressed by Canada in the game against Jamaica save for the aforementioned gaff by Onstad so I’m cautiously optimistic for tonight. They have to win because I have tickets for the Mexico game in Edmonton in October and I want that game to mean something. :)

I can not believe how terrible that pitch was! Its pretty embarrasing. i am amazed that it met FIFA standards. Terrible outcome for Canada, not a very strong performance, especially by Hume.

Well, Canada lost, but I think we held our heads high, so no shame. The Hondurans played sissy-soccer, rolling around in agony anytime a Canadian came near them, in order to draw penalties or just run down the clock. I’m proud of our Canadian team for not resorting to such pathetic sissy-play.

I’d rather see our team lose like men, rather than win as sissies.

Carl, I couldn’t agree with you more about Hume. I was sitting on the side he was playing on, and I couldn’t believe I was watching Ian Hume, the same guy that came off the bench to score against the States in the crucial Gold Cup game last year. I really liked the guy before saturday’s game, in fact I thought he was one of our bright up and comers, perhaps he just had a bad game, but we’ll have to see, because some of the mistakes he made were inexcusable. Generally though, Canada played extremely well for a good 60 minutes of the match, with the first 30 of the second half going to Honduras. As per usual though, once the Hondurans went in front, they started with the theatrical performances, I was disgusted that they even did it in Canada, and that the refs were still oblivious. But what can you expect I guess, after all they were Costa Rican. Too bad about Radz, he was on fire. Why Brennan doesn’t see more action is beyond me, especially when Toronto could have used him against Chivas. DeRo had a good shot, but he usually is alot more effective. Ohh, and I liked the trip on de Guzman by the way, there wasn’t even a foul for it, and Honduras almost scored on the counter attack. Finally, they didn’t use Onstad, thank god. That guy has had so many blunders while playing for us, that it boggles my mind that he is still the number 1 goalie. I was also dissapointed that Friend didn’t see more action, he played very well considering the amount of time that he was on for.
One last note; Mexico will be tough, but I have faith, Canada usually plays better against teams that are considered stronger than them… and… I was on TV!!!!

@Don - You should watch the game again and look more closely at the fouls committed. The ref didnt even call half of what he should have for both sides so don’t call Honduras win sissy soccer. They came back to win it. Canada played well I will say that and they dominated Honduras first half but second half they died for some reason.

Honduras looked very weak in middle by the way.

You should really be angry at Canada for not using their best players.

Did you also notice they were rolling around first half when they were losing?

Ok, Canada lost to Mexico, but the real concern is DeRo and Serioux being suspended for the next game. Perhaps DeRo hasn’t been amazing, but he still is one of our best, and it will be hard to find a decent replacement. Maybe they’ll go with more strikers next game, like throw in Occean into the starting lineup, seeing that we need goals. We will miss Adrian as well, I mean that guy is a tank moving up and down the right flank, and he’s got one hell of a throw when we need it. I guess Brennan will finally see more action after all, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jazic used in the next match as well. On the game; hats off to Mexico, for a well deserved win. The ref was phenomenal, Canada held in there, but Mexico really outplayed us. Hopefully people will realise that Hirschy is the #1, after seeing his stellar performance. He had no chance on either of the goals, and quite frankly, when guys like Stalteri and Serioux get out muscled by Omar Bravo, you know something is wrong. In the end, it’s not a surprising result, but the Mexican goals themselves sure were, seeing that they were both headers.

Wow, canadasoccer.com just released the new Concacaf rankings. We sit 5th with Honduras, and Mexico in front of us, while Jamaica didn’t make the top 10. Costa Rica, on the other hand, is 4th with only 1 team in their current group that made the top 10, which is Haiti and they sit 10th. No wonder they’re doing so well, tell me the draws aren’t rigged.

Ohh, and why was Pozniak called up? I know Imhof is injured, but I’m sure they could have found better than Pozniak.

To water down our team even more, de Guzman has been declared injured, and his repalcement is… Nik Ledgerwood? Christ, where is Occean, or furthermore, Peters, who would make a nice fit.

Seriously, I can’t believe what you are all saying, Canada should be embarrassed in every sport, I can’t believe such a big country can’t even make it in basketball to the Olympics; we don’t have a tennis player that can represent us, boxing bla bla bla, and soccer? C’mon guys.
I am living in Argentina now and playing soccer for a professional Team, there is a Canadian player playing for River Plate and if I am not wrong I think he is 20 years old, now my question is where the Scouts are? Are there any or is it just let my son play thank you very much, c’mon please man, CONCACAF?? We playing against nobody, we have been putting in players that play in Europe for a long time and the results? Nothing positive, if we are playing against Latin American countries why not start introducing its style? Why keep on playing long balls, running all over the field for nothing, to make my point I can’t believe Canada is out of the World Cup again. People start complaining do something there, does anybody care about our national team? Somebody said I am proud of our Canadian team lost like man, buddy we lost against Honduras, HONDURAASSS CMONNN

To adopt what style? Are you insinuating that we should fall down near the end of games, and call the stretcher onto the field every time, just to preserve a lead? To me this isn’t much of a style, maybe you’d want to question your own style before slandering others. To answer your other question, maybe you are not aware of this, because it is only a world known fact, but we are the best country in the world for hockey. The reason why we don’t have many soccer players is because it doesn’t get much exposure here, it’s more of a family sport. Most kids watch hockey here, thus, they want to become hockey players. We only have 3 professional soccer teams, and only 1 of them is in the MLS. But I guarantee you, that soccer is on the rise here, and I am not the least bit embarassed of being a supporter. Actually, I find it quite insulting that you think we should be embarassed. I don’t care how poorly they perform, because it is about honour and respect for the country. This team is the representation of an entire nation and for you to say that Canadians should be embarassed of them just shows that you have no honour. Who is this fellow you speak of on River Plate? He does not appear on their roster, but if he does exist, I hope he does the honourable thing and chooses Canada. If not, he’ll just be another guy that jumps ship. Don’t worry, we’re used to it.

Alex, please man, for such a big country we are only good at hockey? ice hockey to be exact cause at field hockey we don’t exist, but the worst part of all this is that we do play many other sports and we compete against American teams all the time, and this is not something just now ok? We have been competing for a long time and always admiring and watching American sports, but what about us? Why aren’t we putting money in to sports? I mean, c’mon we participate at THE OLIMPPICS being one of the countries with most athletes and we cant even make it at the top 10, i am not saying that i love my country, I am just mad that the people responsible in promoting, investing and helping out new generations are not doing what they are supposed to, because there is money i just don’t know where does it all go, and when I say change style I don’t mean rolling on the floor to waste time, i mean playing soccer, keep the ball on our feats, dominating the game, play smart, its not easy to recuperate the ball, so why do we play long balls, kick the ball away to make our forwards run all the time and get nowhere, I really had hopes that Canada was going to make it to this World Cup, but looks like I have to wait for my country for another four years, Canada is a multicultural country where most of the countries where people come from their first sport is soccer, so why not pass TV games on TV? How can they not pass on TV a Canadian national game on TV live?? What’s more important?

Well I agree 100% that there is no exposure, and that is a big reason why Canada doesn’t attract many fans or players for that matter. However, it seems your argument has changed a bit. If you are from Canada, you should be ashamed of even fathoming the thought that Canada is an embarassment. As I told you erlier, it is about honour, you support the team through thick and thin.

Maybe if we had some decent officials, and not Benito Archundia, we would have a chance. (By the way, he’s oficiating the Monreal vs Olimpia match as I write, and he hasn’t called alot of things done against Montreal, Roberto Brown in particular.)

We don’t just kick and run, so I have no idea as to what you are talking about.

Every single WC Qualifier, with the exclusion of the St.Vincent series, was on TV, by the way.

Ohh, and it’s “Olympics”, and “Feet”, and it is very interesting that you “don’t love” your country.

trust me buddy, i do love my country and very much, and you can say whatever you want but the day i will say Canada lost (in soccer) and say at least they lost with honour will be the day the Canadian Soccer Federation does things right, and you are only backing up Canada against Honduras, but Canada would not have been in the situation they are now if they hadent lost the passed games, or am i wrong?
