CONCACAF Can Bite My Arse

June 22nd, 2008 | By: Sam | 12 Comments »

First of all, I’ll get this out of the way: CONCACAF sucks shit. All has been said and done in the second round of the qualifiers, with nary an upset to speak of, except maybe Panama losing to El Salvador, but take a look at the groups now and you’ll see the source of my ire.

Since Canada easily shed the obstacle of St Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday (caught the first half but had to go to a barbeque), we’re now in the Group of Death, which usually isn’t a big deal, but seriously. This is ridiculous. This is how they compare.

Group A consists of the mighty USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and Guatemala.
Group C consists of bloody Costa Rica, bloody Suriname, bloody El Salvador and bloody Haiti. Is this a joke?
And of course, we get stuck with Mexico, Jamaica and Honduras.

Sure, we can handle it. In the first half of our 4-1 win over St. Vinny, we showed lots of really good passing and counters, but the finishing touch was lacking (just ask DDR, he missed from about a yard and a half with no keeper in sight). But this is unfair.

That’s all I have to say for the moment. Sorry for being lazy and not motivated to write anything on this blog for the past couple of months. I’ll try my best to post more frequently, but no promises.

Kosh out suckas.

To lend a little more stat based backing to your (well founded) frustration..

Taking the regional rankings, Group C has CONCACAF’s 1st, 3rd, 4th and 9th best teams.

If we add up the global rankings for each group so lower numbers=harder groups:
Group A=301
Group B=209
Group C=453

Canada (and for that matter, everyone else in that group) got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on this one…

That is, of course, using FIFA’s rankings. Which are, I believe actually a fair indicator of quality with weaker countries (they don’t work for saying who “the top 20″ are, or even what order they should be in, though).

You guys are gonna get fucked by Mexico, but you can probably handle Honduras and Jamaica so is it really that much to complain about?

I’ve been keeping an eye on the skewed groups on my blog, updating with every new set of FIFA rankings.

But with Panama being upset by El Salvador, the situation becomes even more ridiculous.

Isn’t the anti-upset standard the idea behind the first two rounds? All of the islands technically have the right to compete, but it saves a lot of trouble for everyone to thin the field right away.

As for the CONCACAF Group of Death, you guys did kind of get shafted, but this kind of thing happens all the time, doesn’t it? It was a fair draw but every third drawn association just happened to be highly ranked. There’s not a lot that can be done beyond seeding entirely on the FIFA rankings, but people are usually clamoring to get away from those.

Yes it’s always fair for us… The gold cup, WC qualifying for the past billion years, nuff said. Canada always gets screwed let’s just call a spade, a spade. I agree with you Kyle (blog writer), I can’t believe that Costa Rica will most likely get through to the last round. El Salvador, Haiti, Suriname?!? Are you f***ing kidding me, and to think one of those teams will be accompanying them.

We’ve got a good track record against Jamaica. Honduras, if we’re having a good day, shouldn’t be an issue. Mexico worries the sh*t out of me - our track record against them is terrible, particularly if we have to play them at Azetca Stadium.

(it is a tough draw though - would much prefer playing Cuba)

Tough draw, too bad Jonathon de Guzman choose Holland instead of playing with his brother.

Who is this Jonathan de Guzman fella? Are you speaking of the same guy who ditched Canada to play for Holland, and then didn’t get picked for the Euros? Oh yeah, I remember him… vaguely. (Smurk)
