(Forgot to finish up my point :P )

As long as Canada can’t really compete consistently against the CONCACAF giants, I wouldn’t hold my breath for a rivalry to develop.

Which sucks, really. The Central American countries have their fierce, local rivalries, and even the Caribbean countries can bounce around some bragging rights amongst themselves. But Canada is Canada :\ You qualify directly for the Gold Cup, put in a decent performance and then practically nothing for the next two years. Rinse, lather, repeat.

What needs to happen to all of Canada, in order for us to get anywhere, is what I decided for myself; Canada has no real summer sport. Although the official summer sport is lacrosse, it is not massively popular. If association football could become a popular summer sport in Canada, that definitely would help.

What I mean is that, since hockey is my main sport, but I have no summer sport, I’ve adopted soccer as my summer sport. If Canada were to do the same, we might actually get somewhere. I began my adoption of soccer by watching the Gold Cup last summer. It was cool, except for the fact that there were hardly any actual Canadians on our team.

Mate, if the Australian experience is any guide, you guys are in for a long and bitter fight between established hockey and rising ’soccer’.

The relationship between association football and our local codes has become quite antagonistic, particularly over Australia’s world cup bid.

Very interesting article, by the way.

Hockey will always be number one here. Its our history.

1986 should have begun the movement towards soccer, but the circumstances were different, as we now have more local leagues growing, teams such as TFC, and kids growing up with the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney on every soccer related billboard or article in magazines, being idolized and jerseys being purchased at mass. The movement is a slow one that’s for sure, but I am confident until we make a World Cup the rise of soccer will still be trumped by “Canada’s game”.
