Hirschfeld Off to Try his Luck in Transylvania
Never mind Dracula, here’s Lars! That’s right, after a short time with Norwegian powerhouse Rosenborg, with whom he enjoyed an impressive UEFA Champions League journey this year, the Canadian goalkeeper from Edmonton (woo!) is heading to CFR Cluj, currently on top of the Romanian Liga 1.
“Hirschy”, as he’s nicknamed, came this close to going into the knockout round of the Champions League, but fell short on the last day, nullifying accomplishments such as a draw at Stamford Bridge and a pair of 2-0 wins against Valencia CF, no less. He also played the full 90 in Canada’s last match, a 2-0 loss against South Africa (although both goals were not his fault).
The Romanian media announced that he had signed a four-year contract with the club, currently five points adrift of Rapid Bucureşti and looking for their first Champions League participation for next year. Himself and two other new arrivals, Diego Ruiz and Sébastien Lebarbier, both Argentinian, will be unveiled to the public in a press conference on Tuesday.
Best of luck to ya Lars!

I posted about this as well, although perhaps prematurely, as today’s news has Lars denying that it’s official (Norwegian)

About 2 hours ago, this thing became official: Hirschfeld signied with CFR Cluj. I am quite impressed with CFR, they also bought Mikael Dorsin, also from Rosenborg, along with the named ones. It’s the first time when a Romanian team has so many foreigners, including about 10-13 Portuguese, another 5 Argentinians… A big “wow!” from me.
But also, I should note that in the 2nd Round of Uefa Cup qualifiers, CFR lost against Anathosis Famagusta in a shocking 0-3 at home, playing the worst game in a couple of years. And that IS something, 3 years ago CFR just promoted in the First League, and another year back they were struggling in the 3rd tier.

Darth: True, I didn’t know much about the club until I wrote this article yesterday, I was really surprised to find out they were on top, and that they have so many Portuguese players as well. Kind of like Hearts.

Also, I forgot one important detail: They lost only 1 game out of 19, and drew another 4, against Steaua, Dinamo and Poli Timisoara, all at home. The lost game was an away fixture at Poli Timisoara.
By the way, nice to see this blog with a subject that concerns a Romanian club

CFR is a very good team. I saw them last summer. They are lethal on attack with Semedo (Portugal), Didi (Brazil) and Fabbiani (Argentine). They needed a good defense, too, and took Dorsin and Lars from Rosenborg. Good luck Hirschy! See you again in CL.
