Well a De won Canadian men’s soccer athlete of the year

Well in the battle of men’s soccer athlete of the year it became a battle of the de’s. After 9 names were listed on the ballot, 70.1% of the ballots went to either de Guzman or De Rosario. The next best member came in with 7.7% which was Atiba Hutchinson. Which again reminded us all that only 3 or 4 players really needed to be included on the ballot.

So who won, which one of the de? The one that is close at home in the MLS, or the one that is busy sipping wine in Spain. Well when in doubt stick close to home, and yes that means Dwayne De Rosario is your winner (37.4% if the vote) as Canadian men’s soccer athlete of the year. This is his third time winning the award in the last 3 years (yes that means he is 100% in that time) and did so on his impressive performance both for the Canadian national team and Houston Dynamo.

In 2007 De Rosario was able to put up the following awards and stats.

- MVP of the MLS Cup.

- His fourth MLS title.

- 5 goals for team Canada during its games this year, a team high for the year.

- 6 goals and 4 assists for Houston during the regular season with 2 goals and 2 assists in the playoffs.

So with woman’s victory of Christine Sinclair, another year goes by in Canada where the same players win the award, the question is do you think Canadian coaches and the public got it right or did de Guzman or some other Canadian player have a better year than De Rosario.

Now that we are done with 2007 awards, let’s look towards the current year that is 2008.
